Taxon
A taxon (plural: taxa) is a taxonomic group of any rank. The Maple family, Aceraceae, the Maple genus, Acer, and the Silver Maple species, Acer saccharinum, are all taxa. In a single classification, each taxon can have only one accepted name, but may have any number of synonyms. The term "taxon" was formally adopted for use throughout the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature by the Sixth International Botanical Congress held in Stockholm in 1950. |
