BONAP's references

BONAP's References

To provide insight into the source materials used to develop BONAP’s various databases, we have divided our reference section into multiple categories including Journals and Periodicals, Natural Heritage Programs, and Additional Reference Sources.  In total, we have applied over 150,000 individual references towards our nearly 5,000,000 state and county-level occurrences.

During the course of this protracted study, BONAP has analyzed  critically over 1,200,000 voucher specimens to document the occurrences of state (or equivalent) and county-level records.  However, this number pales in comparison with the vast number of vouchered specimens analyzed and documented by others who have shared their voucher records with BONAP in order to substantiate the occurences of the approximately 5,000,000 county-level records.  Although the great majority of these vouchers are housed within the documentation section, several hundred thousands vouchers reside in personal collections or other small but valuable collections.

Floristic Literature Documentation

Journals and Periodicals: This section lists titles of journals and periodicals of botanical literature used for assessing the phytogeography, taxonomy and nomenclature of vascular plants found within the geographic area of “North America” (including all U.S. States, all Canadian Provinces, the French holdings of St. Pierre and Miquelon, the Island of Greenland, and the Islands of Puerto Rico, Navassa and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean). Rather than listing all 150,000 references, in our internal databse, we have linked the title and year of each specific journal/periodical with each individual taxon and each phytogeographic record; thus permitting all state and county-level phytogeographic occurrences to be linked back to their original reference sources. Although for this website we do not show the documentation of individual county-occurence data, we do show the state or equivalent documentation. The county-level documentation will be presented within our soon-to-be-released Floristic Synthesis.

Additional Reference Sources: Within this section, we list the more voluminous monographic, revisionary and floristic references used in producing our plant distribution maps. Although the vast majority of these references are formally published, some of the Ph.D. dissertations, Master’s theses, and minor floras or florulas remain unpublished, while others are still in preparation but are used and cited here with permission from the authors. Similar to the methodology used within the Journals and Periodicals section, the scientific name of each taxon is linked to a specific state or equivalent geographic area.

Specimen Voucher Documentation: The following herbaria, museums, special collections and other repositories of vascular plants have been visited, consulted, or have provided valuable county-level records for our National Plant Atlas.

Natural Heritage Programs: For nearly four decades, BONAP has worked closely with various conservation groups across North America; however, none has provided as much insight, shared as much data, or offered as much assistance to BONAP as The Nature Conservancy (TNC), NatureServe and the various State Heritage Programs. Two key individuals deserve enormous credit for assisting BONAP; Dr. Robert E. Jenkins, former Vice President of TNC and chief architect of The Heritage Program Network, and Dr. Larry E. Morse, former Chif Botanist of TNC and former North American Botanist of NatureServe. BONAP owes special thanks to both of these individuals for their wisdom, insight and dedication in promoting conservation biology over the past forty years.

The State Heritage Programs have also provided invaluable information and insights into issues of conservation and rarity, and have served our states and provinces well by protecting rare organisms and sensitive habitats. Virtually all of the rarity fields and concepts found within our plant distribution maps are based largely on definitions and concepts promoted and used by the Heritage Network. Therefore, we have dedicated this special reference section to them for all they have accomplished and for the help they have provided BONAP in building our databases.
